What Medicare Doesn’t Cover and How People Are Filling the Gaps

Medicare provides valuable health coverage for millions of Americans, but it does not cover everything. Many beneficiaries are surprised to learn that there are important gaps in coverage that can lead to unexpected out-of-pocket costs. Understanding these gaps and how to address them is key to protecting both your health and your finances.

One of the most common misconceptions is that Medicare covers all medical expenses. In reality, Original Medicare, which includes Part A and Part B, leaves several areas uncovered.

For example, Original Medicare does not typically cover:

    • Routine dental care, including cleanings, fillings, and dentures
    • Vision services, such as eye exams for glasses or contact lenses
    • Hearing aids and most hearing-related exams
    • Long-term care, such as extended stays in nursing homes
    • Most care received outside of the United States

In addition, even covered services can come with out-of-pocket costs like deductibles, copays, and coinsurance. Without additional coverage, these expenses can add up quickly.

So, what options do beneficiaries have?

One option is enrolling in a Medicare Advantage plan which may include a Prescription Drug plan.

Another option is pairing Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement plan, also known as Medigap. These plans are designed to help cover out-of-pocket costs like coinsurance and deductibles, providing more predictable healthcare expenses.

Prescription drug coverage is another important piece. Medicare Part D plans help cover the cost of medications, which can be essential for those managing ongoing health conditions.

Some individuals also choose to set aside funds in savings or health-related accounts to prepare for services that are not covered. Planning ahead can make a significant difference when unexpected needs arise.

The right approach depends on your individual needs, budget, and healthcare priorities. What works for one person may not be the best fit for another.

This is where having the right guidance matters. As a licensed insurance broker, we help clients understand what their current coverage includes, identify potential gaps, and explore options to strengthen their overall plan.
